MARIO PEI (b. 1901)

An Italian-born American recognized as one of the most prominent authorities and authors on languages, Pei created the 37-language course now called The World's Chief Languages at Columbia University. With the possible exception of Georges Schmidt (below), he speaks, reads, or understands more tongues than any other living person.
