So inevitable seems the coexistence of man and dog that, according to an ancient North American Indian myth, the Great Creator in the Sky was already accompanied by a dog when he created earth and man.

The dog is descended from the tomarctus, a wolflike animal that roamed the earth 15 million years ago. Stone Age frescoes in Spain offer the first concrete evidence that huntsmen and trained dogs were stalking game together as early as 10,000 B.C. However, dogs were undoubtedly working partners with prehistoric men in Europe--lurking around campfires, surviving on discarded garbage, and guarding their human "pack"--many thousands of years before that date.
