1. The Firewalkers. "On 3 continents and in 9 different countries I have watched men walk slowly through the length of pits filled with live coals, glowing embers or red-hot rocks. I checked their feet both before and after the ceremony and never discovered either a form of skin protection or even a trace of a blister. In Tahiti I threw a handkerchief into the pit and watched it turn to white ash in a flicker. But the natives who stalked across both ways gave no sign of discomfort, although the heat generated was such that none of the spectators could approach within 10 yards without getting their faces singed."
