THE MANUAL ALPHABET was created by Abbe Charles Michel de l'Epee (1712-1789), a priest and lawyer, who established the 1st public school for the deaf in Paris. The sign language method was developed and perfected by De l'Epee's successor at the school, the Abbe Sicard (1742-1822).
