--1816-1817. Thomas Erskine's Armata was probably the 1st appearance of the "twin-earth" theme in science fiction. This one was said to be attached to ours at the South Pole. Unlike earth people at that time, the people of our twin world were fearful both of technological progress and of suppressing it.
