--1638. English bishop Francis Godwin published The Man in the Moone, or, A Discourse of a Voyage Thither by Domingo Gonsales. Sr. Gonsales was flown to the moon by a number of trained swanlike birds. He found it inhabited by a pastoral people who deported all potential criminals to the earth . . . mostly to North America! Godwin came close to describing the law of gravity, which Newton had yet to "discover."
