Nathan Hale. American. Worked for: U.S., Revolutionary War.

Former schoolteacher Nathan Hale, a captain in Washington's army, volunteered to spy on the British in New York. Dressed as a "plain young farmer," he entered enemy territory, drew maps, and recorded troop numbers. A relative of Hale's, working for the British, recognized him and betrayed him to General Howe. Hale confessed and was hanged the next day.
