Drebbel, a Dutch inventor, is credited with building the 1st navigable submarine around 1620. It was a rowboat, carefully covered over with leather and operated by a dozen oarsmen whose oars reached the water through flexible leather closures. Drebbel figured out how to produce oxygen from saltpeter, possibly the 1st use of the gas, enabling the boat to remain underwater up to 15 hours.
