1272 MARCO POLO GOES TO CATHAY

A 13th-century Venetian merchant, traveler, storyteller, Marco Polo was the 1st outside traveler to cross the entire continent of Asia. He twice visited Cathay--the Tartar name for China--and was received by Kublai Khan, Emperor of the Tartars. Polo gave the West its 1st picture of life in medieval China. Later, while a prisoner of war, he wrote The Travels of Marco Polo.
