Iraq leads in world production and Algeria and Tunisia are other large producers. In the U.S. dates are grown in Southern California and Arizona. A yearly festival is held in Indio, Calif., exhibiting the many varieties. They provide lots of sugar and minerals, are laxative and helpful to weak stomachs. For a nutritious drink, try heating 4 or 5 pitted dates slowly in a pan with a glassful of milk, until the milk becomes tan, then add vanilla.
