Cherry

The U.S. is the leading cherry producer, but they are a major crop in Western Europe, with West Germany, Italy, and Switzerland the leaders. Turkey, Japan, Argentina, Chile, Australia, and Canada also grow large quantities. The U.S.S.R. leads in tart cherry production with the U.S. next. Over half of the sour cherry production is used for canning and freezing. Sweet cherries are consumed fresh or canned. The fruit provides vitamin A and small amounts of calcium and phosphorus.
