FRUITS OF THE EARTH

Breadfruit

This fruit is a staple in the Pacific islands. It has a high amount of carbohydrates and is a good source of thiamine, niacin, and vitamin C. When baked, the flavor and texture are said to resemble those of potatoes. They are cooked and served with butter or eaten raw. In the South Seas, cloth is made from the tree's fibrous inner bark, the wood is used for canoes and furniture, and glue is made from the milky juice.
