. . . Founded in 1973 "to protest the proliferation of special days and weeks by providing Americans with one 24-hour period when they can just sit--without celebrating or honoring anything." Founder Harold Coffin was selected as Chairman of NNF "Because nothing is something he does better than anybody else." National Nothing Day is celebrated worldwide every year on January 16. "The only regret of the negative thinkers in the Nothing Foundation is that in order to combat the proliferation of special days they were forced to create an additional special day." An expression of interest in the foundation's purposes qualifies one for membership. Total number of members is unknown. Publishes nothing. Holds no meetings or conventions.

. . . Founded in 1929 by Amelia Earhart. Purpose is "to provide a close relationship among women pilots and to unite them in any movement that may be for their benefit or for that of aviation in general." Assists aerospace education groups such as the Civil Air Patrol, Civil Defense, National Aerospace Education Council, and National Intercollegiate Flying Association. Sponsors variety of air races. Membership is by invitation only and is limited to women possessing active pilots licenses. Husbands of Ninety-Nines, called 49 1/2ers, are strong supporters of the group's activities. 4,300 members, 141 chapters.

Founded in 1972 as "a population organization and a personal rights organization which supports the emergence of child-free life-styles in the hope of achieving a better and more spacious and humane world for ourselves, and for the children of tomorrow." Works to change both economic and social discrimination against non-parents. Dues are $10 per year and membership is open to both parents and non-parents who "share the philosophy that those who elect to remain child-free must be accorded respect and equitable treatment, as well as recognition of their significant contribution to society." Members have included Hugh Downs, Jim Bouton, Shirley MacLaine, Anthony Newley, and Alvin Toffler. 2,000 members, 30 chapters.

. . . Founded in 1971 "to develop a vast network of hiking trails, interconnecting all regions of the continent, to encourage expeditionary and nomadic interests." Dues, which are $7 per year, include a subscription to a periodic newsletter, the Echo, and entitle members to a 20% discount on guide maps. Needs "volunteer scouts"--no experience required--to explore and take notes on sections of the trail study routes to help evaluate their desirability and conditions. 5,000 members.
