Aims "to establish as a fact that this earth is flat and plane and that it does not spin and whirl 1,000 mi. an hour and to expose modern astronomical science as a fraud, myth, a false religion." Claims that the society's factual proof that the earth is flat has been ignored because "it's a thing that can't be explained" and that to disprove the round-earth theory "would bring down the government, would bring down education--it would bring down everything." Dues are $5 per year and include a subscription to Flat Earth News. 100 members, 2 chapters.

Fortean Organization, The International, P.O. Box 367, Arlington, Va. 22210

. . . Founded in 1965 and derives its name from American writer Charles Fort (1874-1932) "who demonstrated that we live in a wild, weird, wonderful world." Investigates the borderlands of science and considers open-mindedly "UFOs, sea and lake monsters, falls of blood, psychic phenomena, abominable snowmen, poltergeists, phantom planets, unidentified submarine objects, and the entire spectrum of the mysterious and unknown. . . ." Invites all "adventurous spirits" to join for $6 a year, which includes a subscription to their quarterly, The INFO Journal. Holds annual convention in August. 1,500 members, 4 chapters.

Founded in 1958 by the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri, "to report and comment on actions by the government, society, and the media that affect the acquisition, presentation, and dissemination of information." Acts as a "national clearinghouse of information, immediately at hand, on problems of the flow of information, on the debates these problems occasion, and on the solutions, defeats, and victories that come in the unending struggle of the individual to be informed of the purposes of his government and of non-governmental organizations that manipulate information in ways they believe to be in his interest."
