Gehrig's 2-run blast broke up-a 3-3 pitching duel between Ford and Hall-of-Fame righthander Waite Hoyt.
Roger Maris, who smacked a record 61 homers in 1961, hit 2 home runs off Hoyt to account for 2 of the 1961 Yankees' 3 runs. Babe Ruth connected for a 2-run homer for the 1927 Yankees in the 1st inning.
