THE BABE SLAMS 2 IN OVERCOMING 1942 CARDINALS
COMPUTER PARK--The 1927 Yankees, powered along on a 2-homer salvo by Babe Ruth, scored 3 runs in the 8th inning to eliminate the 1942 St. Louis Cardinals, 6-4, in the last game of the computerized semifinal round. The victory earned the 1927 Yanks the right to meet the 1961 Yankees in the title game.
Ruth's pair of home runs accounted for 3 runs, all at the expense of Mort Cooper, the starting and losing pitcher for the 1942 Red-birds. The Babe smacked a 2-run homer in the 5th and then came through again at long range with a solo clout leading off the 8th.
Enos Slaughter and Stan Musial, who each stroked 3 hits, paced the 8-hit attack for the Cardinals off winning pitcher Waite Hoyt. It was the 2nd tournament triumph for Hoyt.
