Honoring an Insect. The citizens of Enterprise, Ala., dedicated the 1st monument to an insect on December 11, 1919, "in profound appreciation of the Boll Weevil and what it has done as the herald of prosperity." Because of the destruction that the weevils caused, farmers were forced to diversify their crops, resulting in a tripling of their income over the best cotton years.
