Ogden Phipps' Buckpasser ruled racing in 1965-1967. In 1965 he was Champion Two Year Old. In 1966 he was Horse of the Year, emulating his sire, Tom Fool, and in 1967 Best Older Horse. He ran in the money 30 of 31 times, 25 times 1st.
Buckpasser, known for blazing speed in the stretch, set the World's Record for the mile at Arlington Park in 1966. He was leading money winner for 2 straight years (1965, 1966) and was syndicated for stud for a then record $4,800,000.
Panama-born Braulio Baeza was the leading money winner in racing in 1965-1968. In 1967 Baeza's come-from-behind tactics brought him 256 wins and a record $3,088,888 in purses. In 1961 he took the Derby on Sherluck, a 65-1 outsider. He repeated in 1963 with Chateaugay, at 10-1.
