His Person: British naturalist who proposed that man evolved from a process of "natural selection" and shared a common ancestry with monkeys. Studied to be both a doctor and a minister. Signed on as a naturalist for a 5-year scientific voyage aboard the government vessel Beagle--considered the trip to be "the 1st real training or education" of his mind. Day-dreamed that ancient manuscripts or letters would one day be discovered and would prove what was written in the Gospels. Married to a deeply religious woman who had some of Darwin's comments on religion omitted from an early edition of his Autobiography. Wrote: Origin of Species, Descent of Man.
His Belief: "The mystery of the beginning of all things is insoluble by us, and I for one must be content to remain an Agnostic."
